California: Price Movements of Top Exports and Other Highlights

In 2024, California ranked second among U.S. states and territories in total exports. The 2024 export trade dollar value from California totaled $183.3 billion, an increase of 2.6 percent from 2023. The price index for the top export industry in California, computer and electronic product manufacturing, increased in January. Export prices for transportation equipment manufacturing, machinery manufacturing, and chemical manufacturing also advanced in January.

Top Six California Exports by Trade Dollar Value, 2024

  • California exports represented 8.9 percent of the U.S. total in 2024.
  • California accounted for 18.5 percent of total U.S. exports of computer and electronic product manufacturing by trade dollar value in 2024, ranking second among all states.
  • The top 6 export industries from California accounted for 68.8 percent of the state's total 2024 export trade dollar value.

U.S. Export Price Indexes: Computer and Electronic Product Manufacturing

  • Computer and electronic product manufacturing export prices advanced 0.2 percent in January.
  • The export price index for computer and electronic product manufacturing has not decreased on a monthly basis since a 0.6-percent drop in August 2024.
  • Export computer and electronic product manufacturing prices increased 0.2 percent for the 12 months ended January 2025.

U.S. Export Price Indexes: Machinery Manufacturing

  • The price index for export machinery manufacturing increased 0.3 percent in January.
  • A 0.5-percent advance in prices for other general purpose machinery manufacturing contributed to the January increase in prices for machinery manufacturing.
  • Export machinery manufacturing prices increased 1.9 percent from January 2024 to January 2025.

U.S. Export Price Indexes: Transportation Equipment Manufacturing

  • The price index for export transportation equipment manufacturing ticked up 0.1 percent in January.
  • Transportation equipment manufacturing export prices rose 2.6 percent for the 12 months ended January 2025.
  • A 2.1-percent rise in prices for motor vehicle parts manufacturing contributed to the 12-month advance in prices for transportation equipment manufacturing.

U.S. Export Price Indexes: Chemical Manufacturing

  • Export chemical manufacturing prices advanced 0.7 percent in January.
  • The price index for chemical manufacturing exports advanced 3.5 percent over the past year.
  • A 7.2-percent increase in prices for other basic inorganic chemical manufacturing led the rise in prices for chemical manufacturing from January 2024 to January 2025.
