California: Price Movements of Top Exports and Other Highlights

In 2023, California ranked second among U.S. states and territories in total exports. The 2023 export trade dollar value from California totaled $178.7 billion, a decrease of 4.0 percent from 2022. The price index for the top export industry in California, computer and electronic product manufacturing, decreased in June. Export prices for transportation equipment manufacturing were unchanged over the same period, and machinery manufacturing prices advanced. Chemical manufacturing export prices declined in June.

Top Six California Exports by Trade Dollar Value, 2023

  • California exports represented 8.9 percent of the U.S. total in 2023.
  • California accounted for 17.7 percent of total U.S. exports of computer and electronic product manufacturing by trade dollar value in 2023, ranking second among all states.
  • The top 6 export industries from California accounted for 67.8 percent of the state's total 2023 export trade dollar value.

U.S. Export Price Indexes: Computer and Electronic Product Manufacturing

  • Computer and electronic product manufacturing export prices fell 0.1 percent in June.
  • Despite the monthly decline, export computer and electronic product manufacturing prices increased 0.5 percent for the 12 months ended June 2024.
  • A 1.2-percent rise in prices for navigational, measuring, electromedical and control instruments drove the 12-month advance in the price index for computer and electronic product manufacturing.

  • The price index for export transportation equipment manufacturing was unchanged in June.
  • Transportation equipment manufacturing export prices rose 4.0 percent for the 12 months ended June 2024.
  • A 4.6-percent increase in prices for motor vehicle parts manufacturing led the 12-month advance in prices for transportation equipment manufacturing.

  • The price index for export machinery manufacturing rose 0.1 percent in June.
  • Export machinery manufacturing prices increased 2.3 percent from June 2023 to June 2024.
  • A 2.8-percent advance in prices for agriculture, construction, and mining machinery manufacturing contributed to the 12-month rise in prices for machinery manufacturing.

  • Export chemical manufacturing prices decreased 0.4 percent in June.
  • The price index for chemical manufacturing exports declined 2.7 percent over the past year.
