Great Lakes States: Price Movements of Top Exports and Other Highlights

The Great Lakes states—composed of Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Wisconsin, and Minnesota—exported a total trade dollar value of $313.6 billion in 2025, a decline of 1.0 percent from 2024. The price index for the largest export industry in the Great Lakes region, chemical manufacturing, advanced in March. Export prices for transportation equipment manufacturing and machinery manufacturing also increased over the same period.

Top Six Great Lakes Exports by Trade Dollar Value, 2025

  • The Great Lakes states exported a combined trade dollar value of $313.6 billion in 2025, accounting for 14.4 percent of total U.S. exports.
  • Chemical manufacturing was the largest 2025 export industry in the Great Lakes, with the region representing 22.8 percent of total U.S. exports by trade dollar value for the industry.
  • The top 6 Great Lakes export industries accounted for 73.8 percent of the region's U.S. total export trade value in 2025.

U.S. Export Price Indexes: Chemical Manufacturing

  • Export chemical manufacturing prices advanced 0.9 percent in March.
  • A 3.0-percent rise in prices for resin, synthetic rubber, and artificial synthetic fibers manufacturing contributed to the advance in prices for export chemical manufacturing in March.
  • The price index for chemical manufacturing exports increased 0.2 percent over the past year.

U.S. Export Price Indexes: Transportation Equipment Manufacturing

  • The price index for export transportation equipment manufacturing increased 0.2 percent in March.
  • Transportation equipment manufacturing export prices rose 2.6 percent for the 12 months ended March 2026.
  • A 3.7-percent rise in prices for motor vehicle body and trailer manufacturing contributed to the 12-month advance in prices for export transportation equipment manufacturing.

U.S. Export Price Indexes: Machinery Manufacturing

  • The price index for export machinery manufacturing ticked up 0.1 percent in March.
  • Export machinery manufacturing prices increased 2.5 percent from March 2025 to March 2026.
  • A 5.9-percent advance in prices for other general purpose machinery manufacturing contributed to the 12-month rise in prices for export machinery manufacturing.

Great Lakes States by Export Trade Dollar Value, 2025

  • The top 3 exporting states within the Great Lakes region—Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan—represented 9.5 percent of total U.S. exports by trade dollar value.
  • Illinois accounted for 25.5 percent of total Great Lakes exports, while Indiana and Michigan represented 22.0 percent and 18.6 percent, respectively.
  • Ohio, Wisconsin, and Minnesota combined for 34.0 percent of Great Lakes exports by trade dollar value in 2025.
