Great Lakes States: Price Movements of Top Exports and Other Highlights

The Great Lakes states—composed of Illinois, Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Wisconsin, and Minnesota—exported a total trade dollar value of $312.9 billion in 2024, an advance of 1.8 percent from 2023. The price index for the largest export industry in the Great Lakes region, transportation equipment manufacturing, increased in April. Export prices for chemical manufacturing also advanced in April, while prices for export machinery manufacturing declined over the same period.
Top Six Great Lakes Exports by Trade Dollar Value, 2024
- The Great Lakes states exported a combined trade dollar value of $312.9 billion in 2024, accounting for 15.2 percent of total U.S. exports.
- Transportation equipment manufacturing was the largest 2024 export industry in the Great Lakes, with the region representing 23.9 percent of total U.S. exports by trade dollar value for the industry.
- The top 6 Great Lakes export industries accounted for 72.4 percent of the region's U.S. total export trade value in 2024.
U.S. Export Price Indexes: Transportation Equipment Manufacturing
- The price index for export transportation equipment manufacturing increased 0.3 percent in April.
- Transportation equipment manufacturing export prices rose 2.4 percent for the 12 months ended April 2025.
- A 2.5-percent rise in prices for motor vehicle body and trailer manufacturing contributed to the 12-month advance in prices for transportation equipment manufacturing.
U.S. Export Price Indexes: Chemical Manufacturing
- Export chemical manufacturing prices advanced 0.4 percent in April.
- A 0.6-percent increase in prices for pharmaceutical and medicine manufacturing led the rise in prices for chemical manufacturing in April.
- The price index for chemical manufacturing exports advanced 3.4 percent over the past year.
U.S. Export Price Indexes: Machinery Manufacturing
- The price index for export machinery manufacturing declined 0.5 percent in April.
- Export machinery manufacturing prices increased 1.1 percent from April 2024 to April 2025.
- A 2.8-percent advance in prices for industrial machinery manufacturing contributed to the 12-month increase in prices for machinery manufacturing.
Great Lakes States by Export Trade Dollar Value, 2024
- The top 3 exporting states within the Great Lakes region—Illinois, Michigan, and Indiana—represented 9.8 percent of total U.S. exports by trade dollar value.
- Illinois accounted for 25.8 percent of total Great Lakes exports, while Michigan and Indiana represented 19.7 percent and 19.1 percent, respectively.
- Ohio, Wisconsin, and Minnesota combined for 35.4 percent of Great Lakes exports by trade dollar value in 2024.
