Mid-Atlantic: Price Movements of Top Exports and Other Highlights

The Mid-Atlantic region, composed of Pennsylvania, Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, and the District of Columbia, exported a total trade dollar value of $100.3 billion in 2023, an increase of 1.0 percent from 2022. Export prices for chemical manufacturing, the largest export industry for the region, decreased in October. The export price indexes for transportation equipment manufacturing, machinery manufacturing, and computer and electronic product manufacturing advanced in October.

Top Six Mid-Atlantic Exports by Trade Dollar Value, 2023

  • Overall exports from the Mid-Atlantic represented 5.0 percent of the U.S. total export trade dollar value in 2023.
  • Mid-Atlantic chemical manufacturing exports accounted for 7.4 percent of the industry's total U.S. exports by trade dollar value in 2023.
  • The top 6 export industries from the Mid-Atlantic accounted for 60.1 percent of the region's total 2023 export trade dollar value.

U.S. Export Price Indexes: Chemical Manufacturing

  • Export chemical manufacturing prices declined 0.2 percent in October.
  • A 1.3-percent decrease in prices for other basic inorganic chemical manufacturing led the drop in prices for chemical manufacturing in October.
  • The price index for chemical manufacturing exports advanced 0.8 percent over the past year.

U.S. Export Price Indexes: Transportation Equipment Manufacturing

  • The price index for export transportation equipment manufacturing increased 0.4 percent in October.
  • A 1.1-percent rise in prices for motor vehicle manufacturing led the October advance in prices for transportation equipment manufacturing.
  • Transportation equipment manufacturing export prices rose 3.7 percent for the 12 months ended October 2024.

U.S. Export Price Indexes: Computer and Electronic Product Manufacturing

  • Computer and electronic product manufacturing export prices ticked up 0.1 percent in October.
  • Export computer and electronic product manufacturing prices decreased 0.4 percent for the 12 months ended October 2024.
  • A 1.6-percent decline in computer and peripheral equipment manufacturing prices drove the 12-month drop in prices for computer and electronic product manufacturing.

U.S. Export Price Indexes: Machinery Manufacturing

  • The price index for export machinery manufacturing advanced 0.4 percent in October.
  • Export machinery manufacturing prices increased 2.3 percent from October 2023 to October 2024.
  • A 2.7-percent advance in prices for agriculture, construction, and mining machinery manufacturing contributed to the 12-month rise in prices for machinery manufacturing.
