Mid-Atlantic: Price Movements of Top Exports and Other Highlights

The Mid-Atlantic region, composed of Pennsylvania, Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, and the District of Columbia, exported a total trade dollar value of $100.3 billion in 2023, an increase of 1.0 percent from 2022. Prices for chemical manufacturing, the largest export industry for the region, advanced in February. Export prices for transportation equipment manufacturing, computer and electronic product manufacturing, and machinery manufacturing increased over the same period.

Top Six Mid-Atlantic Exports by Trade Dollar Value, 2023

  • Overall exports from the Mid-Atlantic represented 5.0 percent of the U.S. total export trade dollar value in 2023.
  • Mid-Atlantic chemical manufacturing exports accounted for 7.4 percent of the industry's total U.S. exports by trade dollar value in 2023.
  • The top 6 export industries from the Mid-Atlantic accounted for 60.1 percent of the region's total 2023 export trade dollar value.

U.S. Export Price Indexes: Chemical Manufacturing

  • Export chemical manufacturing prices increased 0.8 percent in February.
  • The price index for chemical manufacturing exports declined 3.0 percent over the past year.
  • A 13.3-percent decrease in prices for other basic inorganic chemical manufacturing led the 12-month decline in prices for chemical manufacturing.

U.S. Export Price Indexes: Transportation Equipment Manufacturing

  • The index for export transportation equipment manufacturing prices advanced 0.2 percent in February.
  • Transportation equipment manufacturing export prices rose 4.9 percent for the 12 months ended February 2024.
  • An 8.3-percent increase in prices for aerospace product and parts manufacturing led the 12-month advance in prices for transportation equipment manufacturing.

U.S. Export Price Indexes: Computer and Electronic Product Manufacturing

  • Computer and electronic product manufacturing export prices increased 0.4 percent in February.
  • Despite the monthly advance, export computer and electronic product manufacturing prices decreased 0.5 percent for the 12 months ended February 2024.
  • A 3.5-percent decline in prices for semiconductor and other electronic component manufacturing led the 12-month drop in the price index for computer and electronic product manufacturing.

U.S. Export Price Indexes: Machinery Manufacturing

  • The price index for export machinery manufacturing rose 0.4 percent in February.
  • A 0.9-percent increase in prices for agriculture, construction, and mining machinery manufacturing led the 1-month advance in prices for machinery manufacturing.
  • Export machinery manufacturing prices advanced 2.6 percent over the past year.
