Mountain-Plains: Price Movements of Top Exports and Other Highlights
November 2024
The Mountain-Plains region, which consists of Missouri, Utah, Kansas, Colorado, Montana, and Wyoming, exported a total trade dollar value of $64.1 billion in 2023, an increase of 5.3 percent from 2022. The price index for export transportation equipment manufacturing, the largest industry in the region by trade dollar value, increased in October. Export prices for primary metal manufacturing advanced in October and chemical manufacturing prices declined over the same period.
Top Six Mountain-Plains Exports by Trade Dollar Value, 2023
- The Mountain-Plains states accounted for 3.2 percent of total U.S. exports by trade dollar value in 2023.
- The largest Mountain-Plains export industry in 2023, transportation equipment manufacturing, represented 3.3 percent of total U.S. exports in the category.
- The top 6 export industries from the Mountain Plains accounted for 73.2 percent of the region's total export trade dollar value in 2023.
U.S. Export Price Indexes: Transportation Equipment Manufacturing
- The price index for export transportation equipment manufacturing increased 0.4 percent in October.
- A 1.1-percent rise in prices for motor vehicle manufacturing led the October advance in prices for transportation equipment manufacturing.
- Transportation equipment manufacturing export prices rose 3.7 percent for the 12 months ended October 2024.
U.S. Export Price Indexes: Chemical Manufacturing
- Export chemical manufacturing prices declined 0.2 percent in October.
- A 1.3-percent decrease in prices for other basic inorganic chemical manufacturing led the drop in prices for chemical manufacturing in October.
- The price index for chemical manufacturing exports advanced 0.8 percent over the past year.
U.S. Export Price Indexes: Primary Metal Manufacturing
- Prices for export primary metal manufacturing increased 4.8 percent in October.
- The export price index for primary metal manufacturing advanced 22.2 percent from October 2023 to October 2024.
- The over-the-year increase in primary metal manufacturing prices was driven by a 30.9-percent rise in prices for nonferrous metal (except aluminum) production and processing exports.
Mountain-Plains States by Export Trade Dollar Value, 2023
- The top 3 Mountain-Plains exporting states—Missouri, Utah, and Kansas—accounted for 2.4 percent of total U.S. exports by trade dollar value in 2023.
- Missouri accounted for 27.8 percent of total Mountain-Plains exports in 2023, Utah 27.1 percent, and Kansas 22.0 percent.
- Colorado, Montana, and Wyoming combined for 23.0 percent of Mountain-Plains exports by trade dollar value in 2023.
