Mountain-Plains: Price Movements of Top Exports and Other Highlights
July 2025
The Mountain-Plains region, which consists of Missouri, Utah, Kansas, Colorado, Montana, and Wyoming, exported a total trade dollar value of $66.9 billion in 2024, an increase of 4.4 percent from 2023. The price index for export transportation equipment manufacturing, the largest industry in the region by trade dollar value, recorded no change in June. In contrast, export prices for primary metal manufacturing and chemical manufacturing advanced over the same period.
Top Six Mountain-Plains Exports by Trade Dollar Value, 2024
- The Mountain-Plains states accounted for 3.2 percent of total U.S. exports by trade dollar value in 2024.
- The largest Mountain-Plains export industry in 2024, transportation equipment manufacturing, represented 3.6 percent of total U.S. exports in the category.
- The top 6 export industries from the Mountain Plains accounted for 73.8 percent of the region's total export trade dollar value in 2024.
U.S. Export Price Indexes: Transportation Equipment Manufacturing
- The price index for export transportation equipment manufacturing recorded no change in June.
- Transportation equipment manufacturing export prices rose 2.8 percent for the 12 months ended June 2025.
- A 3.7-percent rise in prices for motor vehicle parts manufacturing contributed to the 12-month advance in prices for export transportation equipment manufacturing.
U.S. Export Price Indexes: Primary Metal Manufacturing
- Prices for export primary metal manufacturing advanced 1.3 percent in June.
- The export price index for primary metal manufacturing increased 26.1 percent from June 2024 to June 2025.
- The over-the-year increase in export primary metal manufacturing prices was driven by a 33.7-percent rise in prices for nonferrous metal (except aluminum) production and processing exports.
U.S. Export Price Indexes: Chemical Manufacturing
- Export chemical manufacturing prices increased 0.5 percent in June.
- A 1.6-percent rise in prices for basic chemical manufacturing contributed to the advance in prices for export chemical manufacturing in June.
- The price index for chemical manufacturing exports advanced 3.9 percent over the past year.
Mountain-Plains States by Export Trade Dollar Value, 2024
- The top 3 Mountain-Plains exporting states—Missouri, Utah, and Kansas—accounted for 2.5 percent of total U.S. exports by trade dollar value in 2024.
- Missouri accounted for 29.0 percent of total Mountain-Plains exports in 2024, Utah 27.2 percent, and Kansas 21.5 percent.
- Colorado, Montana, and Wyoming combined for 22.3 percent of Mountain-Plains exports by trade dollar value in 2024.
