Mountain-Plains: Price Movements of Top Exports and Other Highlights
July 2026
The Mountain-Plains region, which consists of Utah, Missouri, Kansas, Colorado, Montana, and Wyoming, exported a total trade dollar value of $70.9 billion in 2025, an increase of 5.6 percent from 2024. The price index for export primary metal manufacturing, the largest industry in the region by trade dollar value, declined in June. In contrast, export prices for transportation equipment manufacturing and chemical manufacturing advanced over the same period.
Top Six Mountain-Plains Exports by Trade Dollar Value, 2025
- The Mountain-Plains states accounted for 3.3 percent of total U.S. exports by trade dollar value in 2025.
- The largest Mountain-Plains export industry in 2025, primary metal manufacturing, represented 8.3 percent of total U.S. exports in the category.
- The top 6 export industries from the Mountain Plains accounted for 74.9 percent of the region's total export trade dollar value in 2025.
U.S. Export Price Indexes: Primary Metal Manufacturing
- Prices for export primary metal manufacturing fell 3.2 percent in June.
- The export price index for primary metal manufacturing increased 24.6 percent from June 2025 to June 2026.
- The over-the-year advance in export primary metal manufacturing prices was driven by a 28.0-percent rise in prices for nonferrous metal (except aluminum) production and processing exports.

U.S. Export Price Indexes: Transportation Equipment Manufacturing
- The price index for export transportation equipment manufacturing increased 0.5 percent in June.
- Transportation equipment manufacturing export prices rose 2.1 percent for the 12 months ended June 2026.
- A 3.4-percent rise in prices for aerospace product and parts manufacturing contributed to the 12-month advance in prices for export transportation equipment manufacturing.

U.S. Export Price Indexes: Chemical Manufacturing
- Export chemical manufacturing prices advanced 0.3 percent in June.
- The price index for chemical manufacturing exports increased 7.1 percent over the past year.
- A 17.4-percent rise in prices for resin, synthetic rubber, and artificial synthetic fibers manufacturing contributed to the advance in prices for export chemical manufacturing in June.

Mountain-Plains States by Export Trade Dollar Value, 2025
- The top 3 Mountain-Plains exporting states—Utah, Missouri, and Kansas—accounted for 2.6 percent of total U.S. exports by trade dollar value in 2025.
- Utah accounted for 31.6 percent of total Mountain-Plains exports in 2025, Missouri 26.4 percent, and Kansas 20.7 percent.
- Colorado, Montana, and Wyoming combined for 21.4 percent of Mountain-Plains exports by trade dollar value in 2025.
