Mountain-Plains: Price Movements of Top Exports and Other Highlights

The Mountain-Plains region, which consists of Missouri, Utah, Kansas, Colorado, Montana, and Wyoming, exported a total trade dollar value of $64.1 billion in 2023, an increase of 5.3 percent from 2022. The price index for export transportation equipment manufacturing, the largest industry in the region by trade dollar value, was unchanged in June. Export prices for chemical manufacturing decreased and primary metal manufacturing export prices advanced over the same period.

Top Six Mountain-Plains Exports by Trade Dollar Value, 2023

  • The Mountain-Plains states accounted for 3.2 percent of total U.S. exports by trade dollar value in 2023.
  • The largest Mountain-Plains export industry in 2023, transportation equipment manufacturing, represented 3.3 percent of total U.S. exports in the category.
  • The top 6 export industries from the Mountain Plains accounted for 73.2 percent of the region's total export trade dollar value in 2023.

U.S. Export Price Indexes: Transportation Equipment Manufacturing

  • The price index for export transportation equipment manufacturing was unchanged in June.
  • Transportation equipment manufacturing export prices rose 4.0 percent for the 12 months ended June 2024.
  • A 4.6-percent increase in prices for motor vehicle parts manufacturing led the 12-month advance in prices for transportation equipment manufacturing.

U.S. Export Price Indexes: Chemical Manufacturing

  • Export chemical manufacturing prices decreased 0.4 percent in June.
  • The price index for chemical manufacturing exports declined 2.7 percent over the past year.
  • A 7.5-percent decrease in prices for pharmaceutical preparation manufacturing led the 12-month decline in prices for chemical manufacturing.

U.S. Export Price Indexes: Primary Metal Manufacturing

  • Prices for export primary metal manufacturing advanced 1.7 percent in June.
  • A 2.5-percent increase in prices for alumina and aluminum production and processing contributed to the monthly rise in primary metal manufacturing prices.
  • The export price index for primary metal manufacturing increased 5.9 percent from June 2023 to June 2024.

Mountain-Plains States by Export Trade Dollar Value, 2023

  • The top 3 Mountain-Plains exporting states—Missouri, Utah, and Kansas—accounted for 2.4 percent of total U.S. exports by trade dollar value in 2023.
  • Missouri accounted for 27.8 percent of total Mountain-Plains exports in 2023, Utah 27.1 percent, and Kansas 22.0 percent.
  • Colorado, Montana, and Wyoming combined for 23.0 percent of Mountain-Plains exports by trade dollar value in 2023.
