New England: Price Movements of Top Exports and Other Highlights
June 2025
The New England region, which consists of Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Maine, Rhode Island, and Vermont, exported a total trade dollar value of $67.4 billion in 2024, a 1.1-percent increase from 2023. Prices for the largest export industry in New England, machinery manufacturing, increased in May. In contrast, export prices for chemical manufacturing and computer and electronic product manufacturing declined over the same period.
Top Six New England Exports by Trade Dollar Value, 2024
- New England exports represented 3.3 percent of the trade dollar value for U.S. exports in 2024.
- The New England states accounted for 6.7 percent of the 2024 U.S. total of machinery manufacturing exports. Massachusetts alone accounted for 3.7 percent.
- The top 6 New England export industries accounted for 74.2 percent of the region's total exports in 2024.
U.S. Export Price Indexes: Machinery Manufacturing
- The price index for export machinery manufacturing advanced 0.3 percent in May.
- Export machinery manufacturing prices increased 0.9 percent from May 2024 to May 2025.
- A 2.6-percent advance in prices for industrial machinery manufacturing contributed to the 12-month increase in prices for machinery manufacturing.
U.S. Export Price Indexes: Computer and Electronic Product Manufacturing
- Computer and electronic product manufacturing export prices edged down 0.1 percent in May.
- The monthly decrease in export prices for computer and electronic product manufacturing was driven by a 0.3-percent decline in prices for computer and peripheral equipment manufacturing.
- Export computer and electronic product manufacturing prices advanced 0.2 percent for the 12 months ended May 2025.
U.S. Export Price Indexes: Chemical Manufacturing
- Export chemical manufacturing prices declined 0.3 percent in May.
- A 1.3-percent decrease in prices for resin, synthetic rubber, and artificial synthetic fibers manufacturing contributed to the decline in prices for chemical manufacturing in May.
- The price index for chemical manufacturing exports advanced 3.4 percent over the past year.
New England Machinery Manufacturing Exporting States by Trade Dollar Value, 2024
- Exports of machinery manufacturing from Massachusetts alone accounted for 9.0 percent of total New England exports in 2024.
- Massachusetts ranked seventh among all U.S. states and territories in exports of machinery manufacturing in 2024.
- The total value of machinery manufacturing exports from New England increased 5.7 percent in 2024 compared to 2023.
