Pacific Northwest: Price Movements of Top Exports and Other Highlights

Exports from the Pacific Northwest—composed of Washington, Oregon, and Alaska—totaled $94.2 billion in 2023, down 7.0 percent from 2022. The price index for the top export industry in the Pacific Northwest, transportation equipment manufacturing, increased in October. Export prices for crop production, computer and electronic product manufacturing, and machinery manufacturing advanced over the same period.

Top Six Pacific Northwest Exports by Trade Dollar Value, 2023

  • Exports from the Pacific Northwest represented 4.7 percent of U.S. exports by trade dollar value in 2023.
  • Transportation equipment manufacturing was the largest 2023 export industry in the Pacific Northwest, with the region representing 9.8 percent of total U.S. exports by trade dollar value for the industry.
  • The top 6 export industries from the Pacific Northwest accounted for 75.2 percent of the region's total 2023 export trade dollar value.

U.S. Export Price Indexes: Transportation Equipment Manufacturing

  • The price index for export transportation equipment manufacturing increased 0.4 percent in October.
  • A 1.1-percent rise in prices for motor vehicle manufacturing led the October advance in prices for transportation equipment manufacturing.
  • Transportation equipment manufacturing export prices rose 3.7 percent for the 12 months ended October 2024.

U.S. Export Price Indexes: Crop Production

  • Crop production export prices rose 3.5 percent in October.
  • The October increase in crop production prices was driven by a 5.2-percent advance in export prices for oilseed and grain farming.
  • Despite the increase in October, export prices for crop production declined 7.0 percent over the past 12 months.

U.S. Export Price Indexes: Computer and Electronic Product Manufacturing

  • Computer and electronic product manufacturing export prices ticked up 0.1 percent in October.
  • Export computer and electronic product manufacturing prices decreased 0.4 percent for the 12 months ended October 2024.
  • A 1.6-percent decline in computer and peripheral equipment manufacturing prices drove the 12-month drop in prices for computer and electronic product manufacturing.

U.S. Export Price Indexes: Machinery Manufacturing

  • The price index for export machinery manufacturing advanced 0.4 percent in October.
  • Export machinery manufacturing prices increased 2.3 percent from October 2023 to October 2024.
  • A 2.7-percent advance in prices for agriculture, construction, and mining machinery manufacturing contributed to the 12-month rise in prices for machinery manufacturing.
