Pacific Northwest: Price Movements of Top Exports and Other Highlights

Exports from the Pacific Northwest—composed of Washington, Oregon, and Alaska—totaled $94.2 billion in 2023, down 7.0 percent from 2022. The price index for the top export industry in the Pacific Northwest, transportation equipment manufacturing, was unchanged in June. Export prices for crop production and computer and electronic product manufacturing declined in June. Prices for export machinery manufacturing advanced over the same period.

Top Six Pacific Northwest Exports by Trade Dollar Value, 2023

  • Exports from the Pacific Northwest represented 4.7 percent of U.S. exports by trade dollar value in 2023.
  • Transportation equipment manufacturing was the largest 2023 export industry in the Pacific Northwest, with the region representing 9.8 percent of total U.S. exports by trade dollar value for the industry.
  • The top 6 export industries from the Pacific Northwest accounted for 75.2 percent of the region's total 2023 export trade dollar value.

U.S. Export Price Indexes: Transportation Equipment Manufacturing

  • The price index for export transportation equipment manufacturing was unchanged in June.
  • Transportation equipment manufacturing export prices rose 4.0 percent for the 12 months ended June 2024.
  • A 4.6-percent increase in prices for motor vehicle parts manufacturing led the 12-month advance in prices for transportation equipment manufacturing.

U.S. Export Price Indexes: Crop Production

  • Crop production export prices remained mostly unchanged in June.
  • A 0.7-percent decrease in oilseed and grain farming contributed to the monthly drop in prices for crop production.
  • Export prices for crop production fell 9.8 percent over the past 12 months.

U.S. Export Price Indexes: Computer and Electronic Product Manufacturing

  • Computer and electronic product manufacturing export prices fell 0.1 percent in June.
  • Despite the monthly decline, export computer and electronic product manufacturing prices increased 0.5 percent for the 12 months ended June 2024.
  • A 1.2-percent rise in prices for navigational, measuring, electromedical and control instruments drove the 12-month advance in the price index for computer and electronic product manufacturing.

U.S. Export Price Indexes: Machinery Manufacturing

  • The price index for export machinery manufacturing rose 0.1 percent in June.
  • Export machinery manufacturing prices increased 2.3 percent from June 2023 to June 2024.
  • A 2.8-percent advance in prices for agriculture, construction, and mining machinery manufacturing contributed to the 12-month rise in prices for machinery manufacturing.
