Puerto Rico: Price Movements of Top Exports and Other Highlights

Total exports for Puerto Rico amounted to $24.7 billion in 2024, a 9.7-percent increase from 2023. Prices for the largest export industry in Puerto Rico, pharmaceutical and medicine manufacturing, were unchanged in March. Export prices for medical equipment and supplies manufacturing advanced over the same period.

Top Puerto Rico Exports by Trade Dollar Value, 2024

  • Puerto Rico was second in U.S. exports of pharmaceutical and medicine manufacturing in 2024 behind Indiana, accounting for 17.6 percent of the total U.S. trade dollar value.
  • Medical equipment and supplies manufacturing was Puerto Rico's second largest export in 2024, representing 6.5 percent of total exports for the island.
  • Combined, the top 2 export industries from Puerto Rico accounted for approximately 88.3 percent of the territory's total exports in 2024.

U.S. Export Price Indexes: Pharmaceutical and Medicine Manufacturing

  • Pharmaceutical and medicine manufacturing export prices were unchanged in March.
  • The export price index for pharmaceutical and medicine manufacturing increased 1.5 percent over the past year.
  • A 4.2-percent advance in prices for biological product (except diagnostic) manufacturing led the 12-month rise in prices for pharmaceutical and medicine manufacturing.

U.S. Export Price Indexes: Medical Equipment and Supplies Manufacturing

  • Export prices for medical equipment and supplies manufacturing increased 0.2 percent in March.
  • The price index for medical equipment and supplies manufacturing advanced 2.9 percent over the past year.
  • The over-the-year increase in export prices for medical equipment and supplies manufacturing was driven by a 3.6-percent rise in surgical and medical instrument manufacturing export prices.

Top States and Territories in Exports for Pharmaceutical and Medicine Manufacturing, 2024

  • The United States exported $114.7 billion of pharmaceutical and medicine manufacturing products in 2024.
  • Puerto Rico ranked second in terms of U.S. export value for pharmaceutical and medicine manufacturing in 2024, accounting for 17.6 percent of U.S. exports.
  • Indiana and North Carolina accounted for 19.5 percent and 11.1 percent of 2024 U.S. exports of pharmaceutical and medicine manufacturing by trade dollar value, ranking first and third among all states and territories, respectively.
