Texas: Price Movements of Top Nonenergy Exports and Other Highlights

Texas remained the top exporting state in 2023, with a total export trade dollar value of $444.6 billion, 8.8 percent lower than 2022. Export prices for chemical manufacturing, the largest nonenergy export industry from Texas, increased in August. The export price index for computer and electronic product manufacturing declined over the same period. Transportation equipment manufacturing export prices advanced in August, and machinery manufacturing prices were unchanged.

Top Six Texas Nonenergy Exports by Trade Dollar Value, 2023

  • The combined value of exports from Texas represented 22.0 percent of the 2023 U.S. total export trade dollar value.
  • Texas accounted for 20.7 percent of the total U.S. export trade dollar value for chemical manufacturing in 2023, ranking first among U.S. states in exports for the industry.
  • The top 6 nonenergy exports from Texas accounted for 80.6 percent of the total trade dollar value of Texas nonenergy exports in 2023.

U.S. Export Price Indexes: Chemical Manufacturing

  • Export chemical manufacturing prices rose 0.1 percent in August.
  • The price index for chemical manufacturing exports advanced 0.2 percent over the past year.
  • A 1.7-percent increase in prices for other basic inorganic chemical manufacturing led the rise in prices for chemical manufacturing from August 2023 to August 2024.

U.S. Export Price Indexes: Computer and Electronic Product Manufacturing

  • Computer and electronic product manufacturing export prices fell 0.8 percent in August.
  • The August drop in prices for computer and electronic product manufacturing was the largest since the index fell 0.8 percent in June 2010.
  • Export computer and electronic product manufacturing prices decreased 1.0 percent for the 12 months ended August 2024.

U.S. Export Price Indexes: Transportation Equipment Manufacturing

  • The price index for export transportation equipment manufacturing ticked up 0.1 percent in August.
  • Transportation equipment manufacturing export prices rose 4.2 percent for the 12 months ended August 2024.
  • A 5.2-percent increase in prices for motor vehicle parts manufacturing contributed to the 12-month advance in prices for transportation equipment manufacturing.

U.S. Export Price Indexes: Machinery Manufacturing

  • The price index for export machinery manufacturing was unchanged in August.
  • Export machinery manufacturing prices increased 1.9 percent from August 2023 to August 2024.
  • A 2.0-percent advance in prices for industrial machinery manufacturing contributed to the 12-month rise in prices for machinery manufacturing.
