Physically impaired and socially isolated, many residents of nursing homes greatly depend on nursing aides and other employees; in providing care the workers themselves incur disabling injuries, often to the back. This article - covering private nursing homes - is the first in a Bureau of Labor Statistics series focusing on "high-impact" industries, defined as those with the largest numbers of workplace injuries and illnesses, although not necessarily the highest incidence rates.
