Interarea differences in consumer prices

An experimental interarea price index project is under way at BLS and has generated indices for several components of the consumer's budget; the aim of the project is to adapt CPI data to facilitate interarea cost-of-living comparisons. In this article, an experimental interarea price index for food at home is analyzed in the context of past research at the Bureau of Labor Statistics on geographic differences in prices.
