Growth in multifactor productivity in these industries slowed by 3.2 percent per year after 1973, according to a new BLS study. Results also show the impact of energy price increases on the utility services industries, which are heavily dependent on fossil fuel inputs. This article introduces a new BLS measure of multifactor productivity for electric, gas, and sanitary services.
