Employment in public schools and the student-to-employee ratio

Through the stampede of the baby-boom generation entering and leaving school and the stormy recessionary periods, employment in local government education surged over the 1964-93 period. As a result, the student-to-employee ration fell from 13.3 in 1964 to 6.4 in 1990. However, the most recent recession included a rise in the ratio for the first time in the history of the data series. This article examines employment trends in public schools, the impact those trends have on student-to-employee ratios, and the influence, or lack thereof, of recessionary periods on those ratios.
