U.S. and German youths: unemployment and the transition from school to work

Unemployment among young people is a serious problem facing the United States today. In Germany, a social consensus on the value of apprenticeship training results in low youth unemployment and a relatively easy transition form school to work. Can the German model be adapted to the United States? This article explores the school-to-work transition and youth unemployment in the two nations and the lessons the United States might learn from Germany, but cautions the limited potential for transferring the German model.
