The number of unemployed persons, at 12.2 million, was little changed in December. The unemployment rate held at 7.8 percent and has been at or near that level since September.

Among the major worker groups, the unemployment rate for adult women (7.3 percent) edged up in December, while the rates for adult men (7.2 percent), and teenagers (23.5 percent) showed little or no change.
