Employment–population ratio and long-term unemployment in July 2014

The employment–population ratio, at 59.0 percent, was unchanged from June to July 2014 but has edged up by 0.3 percentage point since July 2013. The ratio, which is the number of employed people as a percentage of the population age 16 and older, remains below its most recent peak of 63.4 percent in December 2006.

The employment–population ratio of men age 20 and older, at 67.9 percent, was unchanged from June to July 2014 but has edged up 0.4 percentage point over the year. The employment–population ratio of women age 20 and older was 55.1 percent in July 2014, essentially the same as the prior month and a year earlier. Among 16- to 19-year-olds of both sexes, the employment–population ratio was 27.1 percent in July 2014, little different from a year earlier.
The number of long-term unemployed (those jobless for 27 weeks or more) was essentially unchanged at 3.2 million in July. These individuals accounted for 32.9 percent of the unemployed. Over the past 12 months, the number of long-term unemployed has declined by 1.1 million.
