The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers declined 0.1 percent from January 2014 to January 2015. That was the first over-the-year decline since the 12-month period ending October 2009.

The energy index fell 19.6 percent from January 2014 to January 2015, with the gasoline index down 35.4 percent and the fuel oil index down 29.7 percent. Electricity was the only major energy item to rise over the last 12 months, increasing 2.5 percent.
The food index rose 3.2 percent from January 2014 to January 2015. Prices for food at home increased 3.3 percent, with all six major grocery store food group indexes rising. Prices for food away from home rose 3.1 percent.
The index for all items less food and energy rose 1.6 percent over the past 12 months, the same as for the period ended December 2014. The index for shelter rose 2.9 percent.
