From the beginning of 2005 to the end of 2015, the Consumer Price Index for all Urban Consumers rose 24 percent. Over that same period, food prices rose about 32 percent. Consumer prices for eggs, beef and veal, butter and margarine, and bread rose more rapidly than overall food prices. Price rose more slowly for breakfast cereal, milk, fresh fruits, and fresh vegetables.

Consumer prices for eggs in December 2015 were more than double what they were in January 2005. Egg prices increased sharply from April to August 2015 as an outbreak of avian flu forced farmers to kill millions of egg-laying chickens. Egg prices have receded a little since August. Even before the recent increases, however, egg prices rose more rapidly than other food prices for most of the 2005–15 period.
Consumer prices for beef and veal were 56 percent higher in December 2015 than in January 2005. Over that same period, prices for butter and margarine rose 47 percent, while bread prices rose 43 percent.
Prices for breakfast cereal rose 14 percent from January 2005 to December 2015, as did prices for milk. Prices for fresh fruits were 20 percent higher in December 2015 than in January 2005, and prices for fresh vegetables were 28 percent higher.
