Transit and ground passenger employment up 18.6 percent since January 2006

Businesses and consumers rely on the transportation industry to deliver products and materials and for transportation to and from work and other travel destinations. From January 2006 to January 2016, employment in the transit and ground passenger industry increased 18.6 percent. Employment in trucking decreased 13 percent from January 2006 to March 2010. Since then, however, the industry has recovered to the point trucking employment was 3.5 percent greater in January 2016 than it was in January 2006.

From January 2006 to January 2016, employment in water (−2.9 percent) and air transportation (−5.2 percent) decreased, compared with a 6.7-percent increase for all private industries. In January 2016, employment in air transportation was at post-recession levels.
These data are derived from the Current Employment Statistics program. The industry employment indexes were computed by dividing seasonally adjusted employment for each month by the corresponding industry’s seasonally adjusted employment for January 2006.
