Import prices decline 12.9 percent from June 2014 to May 2017

Import prices fell 12.9 percent from a recent peak in June 2014 to May 2017. Import prices from every locality of origin for which BLS publishes data decreased during this period. From June 2014 to May 2017, prices for imports originating from Canada fell 21.0 percent, and prices for imports from Mexico declined 10.9 percent.

From June 2014 to May 2017, prices for imports originating in the European Union decreased 5.0 percent, including a 10.7-percent decrease in prices for imports from the United Kingdom. Prices for Chinese imports declined 3.8 percent during this period, and prices for imports from Japan declined 2.5 percent.
From May 2016 to May 2017, prices for all imports increased 2.1 percent. Prices for imports originating in Canada increased 5.4 percent during this period, while prices for imports from Mexico increased 1.0 percent. Prices for imports from Japan increased 1.2 percent over the year ending May 2017, and prices for imports originating in China decreased 1.1 percent.
