In May 2017, the job openings rate for total private was 4.0 percent (5.1 million), while the rate for hires was 4.2 percent (5.1 million) and the rate for total separations was 4.0 percent (4.9 million). The leisure and hospitality industry had the highest job openings rate in May, at 4.9 percent, followed by professional and business services at 4.8 percent.

In May, the leisure and hospitality industry also led in both its hires rate and total separations rates (6.0 percent each). The professional and business services industry had a hires rate of 5.5 percent and a total separations rate of 5.3 percent. The construction industry had a job openings rate of 2.2 percent, a hires rate of 5.5 percent, and a total separations rate of 5.2 percent.
