Nationwide, 6.3 percent of jobs were in production occupations in May 2017. In Elkhart-Goshen, Indiana, 36.0 percent of jobs were in production occupations. Dividing Elkhart-Goshen's 36.0 percent by the national percentage of 6.3 percent gives us 5.69, which is Elkhart-Goshen's location quotient for production occupations.

Location quotients are a way of comparing the occupational composition in areas of different sizes, such as a metropolitan area and the nation. If an occupational group's location quotient for an area is less than 1.0, the percentage of jobs in that group in that area is smaller than the national percentage of jobs in that occupational group. If the location quotient is more than 1.0, the percentage of jobs in that occupational group is higher than the national percentage.

Elkhart-Goshen's location quotient of 5.69 means the percentage of jobs in production occupations in that area was 5.69 times the national percentage. Production occupations had a higher location quotient in Elkhart-Goshen than any other occupational group. The chart shows the occupational group with the highest location quotient in each metropolitan area.

Production occupations had the highest location quotient in over 80 metropolitan areas, mostly in the Midwest and South, including Dalton, Georgia; Columbus, Indiana; Kokomo, Indiana; Cleveland, Tennessee; and Hickory-Lenoir-Morganton, North Carolina, which each had a location quotient for production occupations of 3.25 or higher.

With 45,850 jobs, production occupations was also the occupational group with the highest employment in Elkhart-Goshen. The occupational group with the highest location quotient in an area is not always the group with the highest employment, however.

Arts, design, entertainment, sports, and media occupations had a location quotient of 2.57 in Los Angeles-Long Beach-Glendale, California, which was higher than the location quotient of any other occupational group. There was more employment in other occupational groups, such as office and administrative support, food preparation and serving related, and sales and related. However, the percentages of jobs in those other groups in the Los Angeles area were closer to the national percentages.

Arts, design, entertainment, sports, and media occupations had the highest location quotient in 3 metropolitan areas: Los Angeles-Long Beach-Glendale, California; New York-Jersey City-White Plains, New York-New Jersey; and San Rafael, California. This occupational group did not have the highest employment in any area.

The location quotient for computer and mathematical occupations was 4.06 in San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara, California. Construction and extraction occupations had a location quotient of 4.25 in Lake Charles, Louisiana. In Corvallis, Oregon, life, physical, and social science occupations had a location quotient of 5.37.
