Winter is here! A look at producer prices for fuels and power since January 2007

Winter is here! Whether heating or supplying power to your home or business, fuel and power-related expenses may pose a challenge to the family or business budget. From January 2007 to November 2017, the Producer Price Index for coal increased 51 percent, compared with an increase of 19 percent for all commodities. Over that period, producer prices for residential electric power increased 30 percent.

From January 2007 to November 2017, producer prices for natural gas decreased 55 percent. Over that period, producer prices for home heating oil and distillates decreased 5 percent. Prices also decreased for other fuel and power-related commodities such as natural gas, propane, transportation electric power, residential natural gas, industrial natural gas, and natural gas to electric power.
