Payroll employment rose 2.6 million in 2018

From December 2017 to December 2018, payroll employment rose by 2.6 million (1.8 percent), compared with a gain of 2.2 million for the previous 12 months.

The construction industry added 280,000 jobs in 2018 (4.0 percent), compared with an increase of 250,000 in 2017. Manufacturing employment increased by 284,000 over the year (2.3 percent), with about three-fourths of the gain in durable goods.

Retail trade employment increased by 92,000 in 2018 (0.6 percent), after little net change in 2017 (–29,000). Employment in education and health services increased by 517,000 in 2018 (2.2 percent), with health care adding 346,000 jobs following a gain of 284,000 the previous year.

Professional and business services continued its upward trend in 2018, adding 583,000 jobs over the year (2.8 percent), compared with 458,000 in 2017.
