In July–September 2021, 40.1 percent of private-sector establishments had employees teleworking some or all of the time. A year later, in August–September 2022, that number had decreased to 27.5 percent.

All industries showed a decrease in the percentage of establishments with employees teleworking some or all of the time. The industry with the largest decrease in the percentage of establishments with employees teleworking some or all of the time was educational services, which went from 68.1 percent in 2021, to 46.0 percent in 2022. The industry with the smallest decrease in establishments with employees teleworking some or all of the time was accommodation and food services, which went from 5.4 percent in 2021, to 2.1 percent in 2022.
In July-September 2021, 10.3 percent of private-sector establishments had all their employees teleworking all the time. A year later, in August-September 2022, that figure had risen slightly to 11.1 percent. In information, the percentage of establishments with employees teleworking all the time increased from 37.4 percent in 2021 to 42.2 percent in 2022, the largest increase over this period. In arts, entertainment, and recreation, the percentage of establishments with all-employee telework decreased from 12.6 percent in 2021, to 7.9 percent in 2022, the largest decrease.

An establishment is an economic unit that produces goods or provides services, usually at a single physical location, and that is engaged in one or predominantly one type of economic activity, for example, a factory, a mine, a store, or an office.
