Nonfarm business labor productivity increased 4.7 percent in the third quarter of 2023, as output increased 5.9 percent and hours worked increased 1.1 percent. The productivity gain was the highest rate since a 5.7-percent increase in the third quarter of 2020.

Labor productivity in the nonfarm business sector increased 2.2 percent from the third quarter of 2022 to the third quarter of 2023.

Labor productivity, or output per hour, is calculated by dividing an index of real output by an index of hours worked for all persons, including employees, proprietors, and unpaid family workers.
