Total nonfarm payroll employment rose by 227,000 in November 2024

Total nonfarm payroll employment rose by 227,000 in November 2024, following little change in the prior month (+36,000). Payroll employment had increased by an average of 186,000 per month over the 12 months prior to November.

The largest over-the-month gain was in private educational and health services with an increase of 79,000 jobs. This increase was driven by 54,000 additional jobs in health care, which was in line with the average monthly gain of 59,000 over the prior 12 months. Over the month, employment trended up in leisure and hospitality, and government. Employment also increased by 22,000 jobs in manufacturing, reflecting the return of workers who were on strike.

Retail trade lost 28,000 jobs in November, after showing little net employment change over the prior 12 months. Employment showed little or no change over the month in other major industries, including mining and logging, construction, wholesale trade, transportation and warehousing, information, financial activities, professional and business services, and other services.
