Happy Valentine’s Day! Let's take a look at some items often purchased to celebrate with that special someone. Are you dressing up for the occasion? Prices for men’s suits, sportscoats, and outerwear were 5.3 percent lower in January 2024 than a year ago. Prices for women’s dresses were also lower, declining 1.7 percent over the year.

Prices for sugary things rose from January 2023 to January 2024, with costs for sugar and sugar substitutes up 7.2 percent and costs for candy and chewing gum up 4.7 percent. Costs for cakes, cupcakes, and cookies were up 1.0 percent, the smallest over-the-year increase since June 2021.
For those sticking with tradition, costs for indoor plants and flowers were 3.0 percent higher than last year. If you are debating whether to deliver them personally or rely on a delivery service, prices for delivery services in January 2024 were 3.6 percent higher than in January 2023. Including a hand-written note is a nice touch. Prices for stationary, stationery supplies, and gift wrap were 0.1 percent lower than a year ago.
In the market for something shiny? Jewelry prices rose 0.6 percent from January 2023 to January 2024, compared with a 5.3-percent increase over the year ended in January 2023.
Staying in or going out? Prices for wine at home increased 0.9 percent from January 2023 to January 2024, while prices for wine away from home rose 4.5 percent.
