These data from the Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages (QCEW) program are calculated with data in quarterly reports from establishments covered by the unemployment insurance program. Employment not covered by unemployment insurance (for example, the self-employed) is not included in QCEW data. QCEW data are not designed as a time series. For more information, please see the QCEW Technical Note. An industry is defined as a group of establishments, generally employers, performing the same or similar economic activities. Establishments are classified by industry using an industrial classification system called the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS). These detailed industries have six-dight NAICS codes. Employment decreases may result from reduced demand for a product or service, or improvements in efficiency that result in fewer workers being required to produce a product or service, or a combination of these and other factors.
