Case TypeA 1-digit code that describes the type of fatal injury count detail. The case types are defined as follows: fatal injuries by detailed industry (all sectors) (0); fatal injuries by detailed private industry (1); fatal injuries by federal government industry (6); fatal injuries by state government industry (7); fatal injuries by local government industry (8); fatal injuries by detailed government industry (9); fatal injuries by detailed event or exposure (E); fatal injuries by detailed source (S); fatal injuries by detailed secondary source (T); fatal injuries by detailed occupation (all sectors) (O); fatal injuries by detailed private occupation (P); and fatal injuries by detailed government occupation (G). CategoryA 3-digit code that identifies the broad industry sector, occupation division, injury and illness classification, or demographic characteristic. IndustryIdentifies the industry as described by the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS), 2007 Edition. Event or ExposureIdentifies the manner in which the fatal injury was produced or inflicted, for example, direct exposure to electricity or roadway collision, as described in the BLS Occupational Injury and Illness Classification System (OIICS), version 2.01. Primary SourceIdentifies the object, substance, equipment, or other factor that was responsible for the fatal injury incurred by the worker or that precipitated the event or exposure, as described in the BLS Occupational Injury and Illness Classification System (OIICS), version 2.01. Secondary SourceIdentifies the object, substance, equipment, or other factor that contributed to the fatal injury incurred by the worker or that precipitated the event or exposure, as described in the BLS Occupational Injury and Illness Classification System (OIICS), version 2.01. AgeThe age group of the worker experiencing an occupational fatal injury: Under 16 years; 16 to 17 years; 18 to 19 years; 20 to 24 years; 25 to 34 years; 35 to 44 years; 45 to 54 years; 55 to 64 years; and 65 years and over. GenderThe gender, male or female, of the worker experiencing an occupational fatality. Race or Ethnic OriginThe race or Hispanic or Latino ethnicity of the worker experiencing an occupational fatal injury: White (non-Hispanic), Black or African-American (non-Hispanic), Hispanic or Latino, American Indian or Alaska Native (non-Hispanic), Asian (non-Hispanic), Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander (non-Hispanic), Multiple races (non-Hispanic), and Other races or not reported (non-Hispanic). Injury and Illness ClassificationThe classification system used to code the case characteristics of occupational injuries, illnesses, and fatal injuries developed by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, as described in the BLS Occupational Injury and Illness Classification System (OIICS), version 2.01. Worker ActivityIdentifies the activity the worker was engaged in at the time of the fatal injury according to the coding structure developed by the BLS Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries. Worker LocationIdentifies the type of location where the incident or exposure occurred based on coding structure developed by the BLS Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries. Demographic CharacteristicOccupational Injuries and Illnesses and the Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries include counts by age, race, and gender. OccupationIdentifies the occupation as described by the Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) system Manual, 2010. AreaDescribes National, State, or selected Metropolitan Statistical Areas.
