Occupational Injuries and Illnesses - industry data - Field Definitions
Area
A 3-digit code that identifies the coverage of the industry estimate. The first digit indicates whether the estimate includes either or both governmental and private sector units:
- 0 All industries
- 1 Private industry
- 7 State government
- 8 Local government
- 9 State and local government
The next two digits indicate the State, with 00 indicating a National estimate
Data Type
A 1-digit code that identifies the type of industry estimate:
- 0   Rate of illness cases per 10,000 full-time workers (Size class 0)
- 1   Rate of injury cases per 100 full-time workers (Size class 0)
- 2   Rate of illness cases per 10,000 full-time workers (Size class 1)
- 3   Rate of injury and illness cases per 100 full-time workers (Size class 0)

A 1-digit code that identifies the specific summary estimate case type. Major case types are defined by the OSH recordkeeping guidelines and include total recordable cases:

- 2   Cases involving days away from work, job restriction, or transfer
- 3   Cases involving days away from work
- 4   Cases involving days of job transfer or restriction
- 5   RSE of Cases involving days away from work, job restriction, or transfer
- 6   RSE of Cases involving days away from work
- 7   RSE of Cases involving days of job transfer or restriction
- 8   Other recordable cases
- 9   RSE of Other recordable cases

Industry
Indicates the industry for which the data were reported. The data are based on the classification of industrial activity as defined by the 2012 North American Industry Classification System (NAICS).
Supersector
A 3-digit code that identifies higher level aggregates of NAICS industries used by BLS.
