Occupational Safety and Health - Field DefinitionsCase TypeA 1-digit code that identifies the specific summary estimate case type. Major case types are defined by the OSH recordkeeping guidelines and include total recordable cases (1), lost workday cases (2), cases involving days away from work (3), cases involving days of restricted work activity only (4), and cases without lost workdays (8). This code also distinguishes among categories of total recordable illness cases: poisoning (T); skin disease (U); dust disease (V); respiratory illnesses (W); disorders due to physical agents (X); disorders associated with repeated trauma (Y); all other illnesses (Z).Data TypeA 1-digit code that identifies the type of industry estimate: illness rate (0); injury rate (1); injury and illness rate (3); number of illness cases (4); number of injury cases (5); and number of injury and illness cases (6).DivisionA numeric representation of the major industry divisions as described in the Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) manual, 1987 Edition.IndustryA Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) code as described in the Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) manual, 1987 Edition.Incidence rateAn incidence rate represents the number of injuries and/or illnesses per 100 or 10,000 full-time workers. Where incidence rates are per 100 workers, the calculation is: (N/EH) X 200,000 where: N = number of injuries and/or illnesses EH = total hours worked by all employees during the calendar year 200,000 = base for 100 full-time equivalent workers (working 40 hours per week, 50 weeks per year). Where incidence rates are per 10,000 workers, the calculation is: (N/EH) X 20,000,000 where: N = number of injuries and/or illnesses EH = total hours worked by all employees during the calendar year 20,000,000 = base for 10,000 full-time equivalent workers (working 40 hours per week, 50 weeks per year).
