May 2025 OEWS Research Estimates by State and Industry or State and Ownership
The OEWS program provides occupational employment and wage estimates by state and industry beginning with the May 2012 reference period and by state and ownership beginning with the May 2025 reference period. These estimates are provided for research purposes only. Data users should be aware of the limitations of the data and use additional caution in interpreting these estimates.
Because of the high level of detail in these datasets, model errors may be higher and estimates may be available for fewer occupations compared with national data for the same industry or ownership, or data for all industries and ownerships combined in the same state. The estimates in the standard OEWS data release also undergo additional quality checks that are not performed on these research datasets.
Two types of research estimates are available. Although both datasets include estimates for federal, state, and local government, the composition of the public sector estimates differs between the two datasets:
- Research estimates by state and ownership group the data by state and public or private sector ownership. This dataset contains five ownership aggregations: private sector; federal government; state government; local government; and federal, state, and local government combined. In the state-ownership dataset, federal government data consist of the federal executive branch, Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) and U.S. Postal Service (USPS). The state government estimates in this dataset include state government schools and hospitals, and local government estimates include local government schools, hospitals, gambling establishments, and casino hotels.
- Research estimates by state and industry group the data by state and industry based on the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS). In the state-industry dataset, federal government estimates consist of the federal executive branch and TVA only; USPS is classified in NAICS 491100 Postal Service. State and local government estimates in this dataset exclude schools, hospitals, and local government gambling establishments and casino hotels. These establishments are classified in their respective NAICS industries, along with similar private sector establishments. All other industries in this dataset consist of private sector establishments only.
