Multifactor productivity in railroad transportation

Multifactor productivity growth in this industry averaged 3.5 percent per year between 1958 and 1989. Consolidation of railroads into larger systems, particularly in the 1980's, generated operational efficiencies that, with technological changes, boosted productivity. This article introduces the multifactor productivity measure for railroad transportation.
