A number of demographic and economic influences have shaped the workforce during the past four decades. Recent events have heightened uncertainties surrounding the update of projections to 2005. This article discusses trends in the American workforce from 1950 to 1992, and how those trends compare to predictions of the future course of the U.S. economy.
