Net employment gain of 668,000 jobs in fourth quarter 2012

From September 2012 to December 2012, gross job gains from opening and expanding private sector establishments were 7.1 million, an increase of 238,000 jobs from the previous quarter. Over this period, gross job losses from closing and contracting private sector establishments were 6.4 million, a decrease of 231,000 jobs from the previous quarter. The difference between the number of gross job gains and the number of gross job losses yielded a net employment gain of 668,000 jobs in the private sector during the fourth quarter of 2012.

Gross job gains at expanding establishments totaled 5.8 million in fourth quarter 2012, an increase of 207,000 jobs from the previous quarter. Opening establishments accounted for 1.3 million jobs gained in fourth quarter 2012, an increase of 31,000 jobs from the previous quarter.

In the fourth quarter of 2012, closing establishments lost 1.2 million jobs, a decrease of 25,000 jobs from the previous quarter. Gross job gains represented 6.4 percent of private sector employment in fourth quarter 2012, while gross job losses represented 5.8 percent of private sector employment.
