63 percent of 4th quarter 2014 employment gain at firms with 250 or more employees

In the fourth quarter of 2014, there were 6.1 million gross job gains at opening and expanding private sector firms and 5.1 million gross job losses at firms that were closing or contracting, yielding a total net employment change of 1.0 million. Firms with 1 to 49 employees saw a net change of 219,000 jobs (22 percent of total net job growth). Firms with 50 to 249 employees accounted for 154,000 jobs (15 percent). Firms with 250 or more employees accounted for 627,000 (63 percent) of net job growth.

Of the 2.9 million net jobs created during 2014, firms with 1 to 49 employees contributed 33 percent of net job growth, while firms with 50 to 249 employees contributed 22 percent, and firms with 250 or more employees contributed 45 percent.

From 2010 to 2014, firms with 1 to 49 employees accounted for 29 percent of net job growth, and those with 50 to 249 employees accounted for 22 percent. Firms with 250 or more employees were responsible for 49 percent of net job growth over this period.
