Fuel import index down 39 percent over the year ending in January 2015

U.S. import prices decreased 8.0 percent from January 2014 to January 2015. This was the largest 12-month decline since the index fell 12.0 percent from September 2008 to September 2009.

The price index for imported fuel declined 39.0 percent over the past 12 months. This was the largest drop since the index fell 41.0 percent from August 2008 to August 2009. From January 2014 to January 2015, petroleum prices declined 40.1 percent, and natural gas prices fell 29.0 percent. 

Prices for nonfuel imports fell 0.9 percent from January 2014 to January 2015. This was the largest drop since the index fell 1.2 percent from February 2013 to February 2014.
