Movie theater establishments and wages, fourth quarter 2014

Do you go to the movie theater in the summer to see the latest blockbuster or catch a break from the heat? In the fourth quarter of 2014, there were 4,286 motion picture theaters (except drive-ins) in the United States. California, Texas, Florida, and New York each had over 200 movie theaters. Delaware had 8, the fewest among all states. The District of Columbia had 12 movie theaters and Rhode Island had 13.

Average weekly wages at movie theaters, except drive-ins, were $262 in the fourth quarter 2014. Metropolitan areas in which the average weekly wage was greater than $400 include Naples-Immokalee-Marco Island, Florida ($442), and Milwaukee-Waukesha-West Allis, Wisconsin ($410).

In California, the state with the most movie theaters, the Hanford-Corcoran metropolitan area had the highest average weekly wage ($287) followed by Oxnard-Thousand Oaks-Ventura ($261).
