Real average hourly earnings up 1.4 percent for the year ending March 2016

In March 2016, real average hourly earnings increased 0.2 percent from a month earlier and 1.4 percent over the year. Before adjusting for inflation, average hourly earnings increased 0.3 percent over the month and 2.3 percent over the year to $25.43 per hour.

The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) increased 0.1 percent in March and 0.9 percent over the year. Average hourly earnings increased 26.9 percent over the 10-year period ended March 2016. The gains in average hourly earnings were partially offset by a 19.1-percent increase in the CPI-U. Real average hourly earnings increased 6.5 percent over the past 10 years.
