Twenty-eight states had statistically significant over-the-year increases in nonfarm payroll employment in January 2017. The largest job gains occurred in California (+330,400), Florida (+277,900), and Texas (+225,300). Two states had significant over-the-year declines in employment: Wyoming (–9,100) and Alaska (–9,000).

The largest over-the-year percentage gains occurred in Idaho (+4.0 percent), Nevada (+3.5 percent), and Florida (+3.4 percent). The percentage declines in Wyoming and Alaska were –3.2 percent and –2.7 percent, respectively.
