Being struck by an object, falling on the same level, and overexertion in lifting were among the leading types of events or exposure that resulted in days of job transfer or restriction or days away from work in six selected industries in 2015. Among the six industries, hospitals had the most cases that resulted in days of job transfer or restriction, 38,580. Of that total, 15 percent resulted from falls on the same level, 13 percent resulted from overexertion in lifting, and 8 percent resulted from being struck by an object.

In general merchandise stores, there were more injuries or illnesses that resulted in days of job transfer or restriction cases (34,990) than cases resulting in days away from work (25,600). Being struck by an object was the event leading to 7,620 injuries or illnesses that resulted in days of job transfer or restriction in general merchandise stores. That compares with 4,820 cases of being struck by an object that resulted in days away from work.

These data are from the Injuries, Illnesses, and Fatalities program. Since 2011, the Survey of Occupational Injuries and Illnesses has conducted a study on the details of case circumstances and worker characteristics for injuries and illnesses resulting in days of job transfer or restriction. In 2014, six new private sector industries were selected for the study.
