Consumer prices up 2.7 percent over year ended August 2018

Over the 12 months from August 2017 to August 2018, the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) rose 2.7 percent, not seasonally adjusted. The August increase was smaller than the 2.9 percent increase for the 12 months ending July 2018.

Prices for food, which had a relative importance weight of 13.2 percent, increased 1.4 percent over the 12 months ended August 2018. Prices for food at home rose 0.5 percent. Prices for meats, poultry, fish, and eggs increased 1.1 percent over the last year, the largest increase among the six major grocery store food groups. Prices for food away from home increased 2.6 percent.

Prices for energy, which had a relative importance weight of 8.1 percent, increased 10.2 percent over the past year. Motor fuel prices (which include gasoline) increased 20.3 percent and fuel oil prices rose 30.9 percent. Electricity prices decreased 0.5 percent.

Prices for all items less food and energy, which accounted for 78.7 percent of consumer spending, rose 2.2 percent over the past 12 months. Shelter prices rose 3.4 percent over the last 12 months, prices for medical care services increased 1.9 percent, while transportation services prices were up 3.9 percent.
