Employment in healthcare practitioners and technical occupations was 8.5 million in May 2017. Registered nurses, with 2.9 million jobs and median annual wages of $70,000, was the largest healthcare occupation. Many of the highest paying occupations were healthcare occupations, including several physician and dentist occupations, nurse anesthetists, and pharmacists, which all had median annual wages greater than $124,000 in May 2017.

Healthcare support occupations had employment of 4.1 million. The largest healthcare support occupations were nursing assistants (1.5 million) and home health aides (820,960), which had median annual wages of $27,520 and $23,210, respectively.

Construction and extraction occupations had total employment of 5.7 million. The largest construction and extraction occupations were construction laborers (employment: 962,060; median annual wages: $34,530), carpenters (693,050; $45,170), and electricians (631,080; $54,110). The highest paying construction and extraction occupations included elevator installers and repairers (24,490; $79,480) and first-line supervisors of construction trades and extraction workers (556,300; $64,070).

These data are from the Occupational Employment Statistics program. See "Occupational Employment and Wages — May 2017" (HTML) (PDF) to learn more. These estimates do not include the self-employed, owners and partners in unincorporated firms, household workers, or unpaid family workers. Median wages are the middle value when wages are arranged from lowest to highest. Half of employees earn more, and half earn less, than the median earnings estimate. Median wage estimates for occupations that have median wages greater than $208,000 per year are not available; these occupations are not shown in the chart.
