Fifty-eight metropolitan areas had increases in nonfarm payroll employment from September 2017 to September 2018. One area had a decrease, and 329 areas had essentially no change in employment. The largest over-the-year percentage gains in employment occurred in Midland, Texas (+9.0 percent), and Atlantic City-Hammonton, New Jersey, and Cape Coral-Fort Myers, Florida (+7.0 percent each). Employment in Wilmington, North Carolina, fell 3.6 percent over the year.

The largest over-the-year percentage increases in employment in these large metropolitan areas occurred in Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford, Florida (+5.9 percent), Jacksonville, Florida (+4.4 percent), and Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land, Texas (+4.3 percent).
The largest over-the-year employment increases occurred in Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land, Texas (+128,700), Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington, Texas (+109,400), and New York-Newark-Jersey City, NY-NJ-PA (+108,500).
