Firefighters face the potential of injury or death each time they are called on to fight fires, rescue people, or preserve property. As wildfires spread in California, firefighters are again called to action to extinguish the blazes and perform rescue activities. In 2017, 5 firefighters in California were killed while working and 2,200 sustained nonfatal injuries and illnesses resulting in days away from work.
From 2013 to 2017, 174 firefighters in the United States lost their lives while working. In 2013, 34 (64 percent) of the 53 total fatal injuries to firefighters resulted from fires or explosions and another 10 fatalities (19 percent) resulted from transportation incidents. In 2017, 8 (24 percent) of the 34 total fatal injuries resulted from fires and explosions and 17 fatal injuries (50 percent) from transportation incidents.
