Consumer prices increase 1.0 percent in the 12 months ending July 2020

The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) increased 1.0 percent from July 2019 to July 2020. Prices for all items less food and energy increased 1.6 percent over the last 12 months. Food prices increased 4.1 percent over the last 12 months, with prices for food at home rising 4.6 percent. Despite increasing in July, energy prices fell 11.2 percent over the last 12 months.

Food at home prices increased 4.6 percent over the last 12 months. All six major grocery store food group indexes rose over that span. Prices for food away from home rose 3.4 percent over the last year.

Energy prices fell 11.2 percent over the past 12 months. Gasoline prices decreased 20.3 percent, while the fuel oil index fell 27.2 percent. Natural gas prices declined 0.3 percent and electricity prices decreased slightly over the year, falling 0.1 percent.

Prices for all items less food and energy rose 1.6 percent over the year ending July 2020. The shelter index rose 2.3 percent over the 12-month span.  Rent prices increased 3.1 percent and prices for owners’ equivalent rent rose 2.8 percent, while lodging away from home prices fell 13.4 percent. Medical care prices increased 5.0 percent over the last 12 months. Prices for airline fares, apparel, motor vehicle insurance, and used cars and trucks all declined over the past 12 months.
