Job openings steady at 9.2 million in May 2021

The number of job openings, 9.2 million on the last business day of May 2021, was little changed from the previous month. Hires were little changed at 5.9 million. Total separations decreased to 5.3 million. There were 1.6 million job openings in trade, transportation, and utilities, and 1.5 million job openings in professional and business services.

From April 2021 to May 2021, job openings increased in other services (+109,000), state and local government education (+46,000), and educational services (+35,000). The number of job openings decreased in arts, entertainment, and recreation (−80,000); state and local government, excluding education (−56,000); and federal government (−17,000).

In May 2021, there were 1.3 million hires in the leisure and hospitality industry and 1.3 million hires in trade, transportation, and utilities. There were 1,2 million hires in accommodation and food services. Over the month, hires decreased in state and local government, excluding education (−56,000) and in federal government (−10,000).

In May 2021, total separations decreased to 5.3 million (−485,000). Trade, transportation, and utilities had 1.2 million total separations, while leisure and hospitality had 1 million total separations. Total separations decreased in four industries, with the largest decreases in professional and business services (−192,000); transportation, warehousing, and utilities (−53,000); and state and local government education (−42,000).

These data are from the Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey and are seasonally adjusted. Data for the most recent month are preliminary.
