Employment in Idaho and Utah over 6.0 percent higher than pre-recession levels

In July 2022, there were 18 states that were at or above 100 percent of their employment levels of February 2020, the month before the start of the COVID-19 pandemic and the recession that resulted from it. The remaining 32 states and the District of Columbia had nonfarm employment levels lower than their pre-recession levels.

Employment in Idaho in April 2020 was 89.7 percent of its February 2020 level. It was back to 100.0 percent before the end of 2020. In July 2022, it was 106.3 percent of its level 15 months earlier. In Utah, employment reached 106.2 percent in July 2022, after decreasing, in April 2020, to 90.9 percent of its February 2020 peak. Montana, North Carolina, Florida, and Texas also had July 2022 employment of over 103.0 percent of their February 2020 levels.
In July 2022, Alabama and Nebraska both matched the nation as a whole, at 100.0 percent of their February 2020 employment levels. In April 2020, their employment levels were 88.3 and 90.5 percent, respectively, of their February 2020 levels.
In May 2020, employment in Hawaii decreased to 76.5 percent of its February 2020 level; in July 2022, it was 92.3 percent. Alaska, the District of Columbia, and Vermont were also below 96.0 percent of their pre-recession employment levels.
In February 2020, total nonfarm employment in the United States was 152.5 million, which was its peak at the beginning of COVID-19 pandemic and recession. Two months later, in April 2020, U.S. employment had decreased to 130.5 million, or 85.6 percent of its February level. July 2022 is the first month in which national employment has returned to 100.0 percent of its February 2022 level.
