Candy and chewing gum prices up 7.5 percent from September 2022 to September 2023

Today is Halloween, a day often associated with pumpkin carving and treats for kids. Stories about the origins of trick-or-treating vary, but going door to door collecting individually-wrapped pieces of candy and chewing gum grew in popularity during the 1950s. Let’s travel back through the Consumer Price Index (CPI) eyeing this sweet, less spooky, side of Halloween.
In September 2023, prices for fresh cakes and cupcakes dropped 1.0 percent. Prices for candy and chewing gum and for cookies were little changed over the month. Over the past year, candy and chewing gum prices rose 7.5 percent and cookie prices were up 6.6 percent. Prices for fresh cakes and cupcakes were 3.9 percent higher than in September 2022. Digging deeper into the CPI data coffers, prices for candy and chewing gum were 39.7 percent higher than 10 years ago. Prices for fresh cakes and cupcakes were up 38.4 percent and prices for cookies increased 32.0 percent.

Looking even further back at costs for goodies popular around this time of year, candy and chewing gum prices rose 86.6 percent from September 2000 to September 2023. Prices for cookies were up 87.6 percent and prices for fresh cakes and cupcakes increased 110.2 percent over the period.
