In January, nonfarm payroll employment increased over the year in 135 metropolitan areas and was essentially unchanged in 254 areas. The largest over-the-year percentage gains in employment occurred in Midland, Texas (+11.4 percent), Odessa, Texas (+7.8 percent), and Napa, California (+6.9 percent). Eight other metropolitan areas had significant over-the-year percentage increases in employment of at least 6.0 percent.

Over the year, nonfarm employment increased in 41 metropolitan areas with a 2010 Census population of 1 million or more, while employment was essentially unchanged in 10 areas. The largest over-the-year percentage increases in employment in these large metropolitan areas occurred in Las Vegas-Henderson-Paradise, Nevada (+6.3 percent), Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington, Texas (+5.9 percent), and Austin-Round Rock, Texas (+5.8 percent).
In terms of the number of workers, the largest over-the-year employment increases occurred in New York-Newark-Jersey City, New York-New Jersey-Pennsylvania (+375,200), Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington, Texas (+234,100), and Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim, California (+218,400).
